What is perimenopause? Signs, symptoms, and what actually helps

Happy perimenopausal women

You're in your 30s or early 40s, and your body feels different. You're not yet in menopause, but you don't feel quite yourself either. Your cycle is changing. Your moods are all over the place. You're tired, wired, anxious… and everything feels a bit blurry.

It's easy to blame stress or getting older. But these changes might be signs of perimenopause. A phase that lives in the in-between, often unspoken and misunderstood. But it's a part of life every woman goes through, and with the right support, you can move through this phase feeling more aware, more empowered and more in tune with your body than ever before.

Am I too young for menopause?

It’s one of the first questions many women ask when they start noticing changes. The answer? Probably – but that doesn’t make your symptoms any less real.

Menopause marks the end of your menstrual cycle – and it typically happens between 45 and 55. But the years leading up to it, known as perimenopause, can start much earlier.

Perimenopause

What is perimenopause, really?

Perimenopause is your body’s natural transition before menopause. It usually starts in your late 30s or early 40s and can last anywhere from 3 to 13 years.

As ovulation slows down, oestrogen and progesterone levels start to fluctuate in a more erratic pattern, triggering both physical and emotional changes.

Signs of perimenopause

Periods may become more erratic, either heavier, lighter, or more irregular. This phase is typically divided into three stages:

Early perimenopause: your periods are still regular, but you start noticing symptoms like mood changes, poor sleep or anxiety.

Mid perimenopause: your cycle becomes more irregular, often varying by more than a week from one month to the next.

Late perimenopause: you begin skipping periods altogether, with gaps of 60 days or more.

Important info

Despite hormonal fluctuations and irregular periods, women in perimenopause can still conceive and carry a child; therefore, effective contraception remains vital throughout perimenopause and into menopause to avoid unintended pregnancies.

Why perimenopause is often missed or misdiagnosed

Perimenopause symptoms overlap heavily with modern life stressors such as fatigue, mood swings, poor sleep, and brain fog, which is why it’s easy for women – and even doctors – to miss it. These symptoms are often mistaken for stress, burnout or ageing.

A 2022 UK survey** found that 77% of women struggled with perimenopause symptoms, yet nearly half had never spoken to their doctor. And many who did say it took several appointments before their symptoms were recognised as hormone-related.

Because hormone levels fluctuate unpredictably, a single test often doesn’t tell the full story, making diagnosis especially challenging.

Food and nutrients that actually help

Hormonal shifts during perimenopause can deplete or increase the demand for certain nutrients, especially due to stress on the nervous system. Providing your body with key nutrients might be the key to making symptoms feel a bit more manageable.

Why nutritional support matters – and what the science says

Nutritional support doesn’t aim to replace hormones but rather works alongside your body to help balance them. As hormone levels fluctuate, your body becomes more sensitive to nutrient gaps – especially in areas like energy, sleep, mood, and bone health. With modern diets, high in processed food and lacking key vitamins and minerals, extra support can be essential.

What the science says
What the science says:
  • Up to 50% of a woman’s lifetime bone loss occurs during perimenopause, largely due to dropping oestrogen levels. Nutrients like vitamin D3 and K2 help regulate calcium and maintain bone density. **
  • Low intake of these nutrients is common in women aged 35+, due to stress, gut health issues, restricted diets, and poor food quality. **

Nutrition doesn’t fix hormones – but it gives your body the tools to cope better with the changes.

What about HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be life-changing for some women. But it’s not for everyone – and it comes with possible side effects and medical considerations. HRT may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke or breast cancer in some women. It also requires regular medical supervision to ensure safety and balance.

Whether or not you choose HRT, giving your body the nutrients it needs is one of the most effective things you can do to feel more in control – but not all supplements are created equal.

What to look for in a perimenopause supplement

During perimenopause, what your body needs goes beyond a basic multivitamin effervescent tablet you buy at a supermarket. It needs targeted, high-quality support that matches the complexity of this transition.

A well-formulated perimenopause supplement should:

  • contain essential nutrients in effective doses;
  • use bioavailable forms that your body can absorb;
  • be based on science and expert formulation;
  • support several key areas at once; and
  • be hormone-free and free from unnecessary fillers or additives.

You don’t have to figure it out alone

Even though perimenopause can feel confusing, isolating or overwhelming, you’re not alone. This is a natural phase all women go through, and with the right support, you can move through it feeling more connected, clear, and at ease with your body.

Start by listening to what your body is telling you. Track your symptoms, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to prioritise your own well-being.
