What bowel movements reveal about health

By analysing our stool, we can determine the condition of our digestion and our general healthIt’s a good idea to make a habit out of checking your stool every time after you go to the toilet. Okay, we know it might be strange or uncomfortable in the beginning, but itcrucial for your health. 


Stool is the no.1 indicator of health

Type 3, as well as type 4, are classified as ideal stools. Types 1 and 2 may indicate constipation and strain during defecation. Types 5 and 6 may indicate lack of fibre or frequent bowel movements, while type 7 means diarrhoea.

The shape

Size is of great importance when studying our diet and possible signs of trouble. If your stool ismall and hard, it’s time for more fibre. Adding fibre to your stool will soften it and increase its volume. A general rule of thumb is, anything that deviates from the long unified shape is your body trying to tell you something’s up. 

The colour

A healthy stool is mostly medium brown in colour. If your stool is white or greyish, it might point to a problem with the bile duct.yellowish stool might point to excess fat which may be a result of a malabsorption disorder, like celiac disease. Black can indicate bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, while bright red might point to bleeding in the lower intestinal tract.  

Always consult your doctor if you’re concerned about stool colour and seek prompt medical attention if you suspect blood in the stool!

The smell

The smell of the stool is not as helpful in determining ouhealth as shape, colour and size are. Usually, the reason for most unpleasant smells is the food we eat. Things like eggs, beans or cheese can cause the stool to have an unpleasant odour. 

The frequency

The number of times we go number 2 can vary. On average, going 2-3 times per day, after every meal, or at least once per day is completely normal. Going every other day is also considered normal, though it may be uncomfortable for some.
