Iodine deficiency

Iodine is a very important essential mineral but unfortunately, not many food sources are rich in it. The foods highest in it are tuna, shrimp, seaweed and eggs.

image

Since it’s so difficult to get iodine from food and consequences of iodine deficiency being so dire, nations have been adding it to table salt for decades. Yet recently, thanks to calls for healthier living, people all over the Western world have started to cut down on salt. A lot of people have stopped using sea salt altogether and switched to Himalayan or rock salt.

All at the expense of the crucial mineral iodine.

Who is prone to iodine deficiency?

At least 400 million** people are living in European countries with no mandatory legislation for iodised salt. You may also be prone to insufficient iodine intake if you:

  • use non-iodised salt (like unrefined sea salt, Himalayan and other rock salts),
  • eat little or no dairy products, seafood and eggs,
  • follow vegetarian or vegan diet,
  • live in regions with iodine-deficient soil (like mountainous areas and river valleys prone to flooding),
  • are pregnant.

What are some of the signs of iodine deficiency?

  • Dry and flaky skin
  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain
  • Trouble learning and remembering
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Swelling in the neck

To ensure you get enough iodine in your diet, it’s a good idea to have a high-quality food supplement in your life, such as Essentials Iodine 200 mcg.
