Why are omega-3 fatty acids important?

Human bodies can produce some fatty acids on their own, but because we lack specific enzymes to synthesise omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, both are considered essential nutrients.

This is why we need to get them by eating foods high in fatty acids.

Omega-6 fatty acids are found in:

- vegetable oil,

- meat, and

- eggs.

And omega-3 fatty acids are found in:

- green leafy vegetables (source of ALA),

- flax and chia seeds (source of ALA), and

- oily fish, krill oil or algae oil (source of EPA and DHA).

EPA and DHA are the most important omega-3 fatty acids in our diet. We can synthesise a small amount of them from ALA (which we get from vegetables, seeds and some oils), but our bodies can’t produce enough.

The recommended ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 is 2:1, but the ratio in which we’re consuming them in developed countries is 20:1.

How much omega-3 per day should we eat?

The minimum daily intake of EPA and DHA should be 250 mg to get benefits.

To provide that amount to the body, you should eat:

  • 200 g of canned tuna every day,

  • 200 g of smoked salmon twice a week,

  • or 1 g of fish oil daily.

Such high daily intake is extremely hard to achieve through a regular diet.

This is why taking an omega-3 supplement is a much simpler, easier way to ensure you get a sufficient daily dose of these extremely important fatty acids.

Why are omega-3s good for you?

Omega-3 fatty acids have many benefits because they can be found in every single cell of the body and therefore play a role in your overall health and well-being.

  • They support the normal function of the heart.

  • DHA especially contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function in adults and brain development in pregnancy and early childhood.

  • The highest concentration of DHA is found in the retina of the eye, so its regular intake supports good vision, while regular omega-3 intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding contributes to normal visual development in babies.

Coenzyme Q10 levels decrease with age

While coenzyme Q10 is naturally produced in the body and consumed through food, its levels start rapidly decreasing after the age of 20.

Coenzyme Q10 can be found in every cell membrane of the body, as it is the key element in the proper functioning of mitochondria to produce cellular energy. The highest concentrations of Q10 can be found in vital organs of high activity, such as the heart.

The main sources of Q10 are meat, fish, dairy and eggs.

You can consume 50 mg of Q10 by eating:

  • 1.1 kg of beef liver

  • 4 kg of chicken breast

  • 8.5 kg of salmon

As you can imagine, it’s very hard to consume 50 mg of Coenzyme Q10 through food on a daily basis.
