Maintaining vitamin D levels is essential!

This important nutrient has a big impact on our well-being: it supports the health of the skeletal, muscular, nervous and immune system.

Recent studies have shown that supplementing with vitamin D, especially during winter, improves the body's ability to fight off respiratory infections.

The transition to colder weather also "cools down" our relationship with the sun. In the colder month, the sun's rays reach Earth at a different angle, leading to shorter days.

Most of us in the northern hemisphere lack a sufficient vitamin D intake from October till April.

Vitamin D is produced in our bodies when we're exposed to the sun. If we get 15-20 minutes of natural sunlight daily, preferably during the morning hours, we will synthesise enough vitamin D. And what to do when that's not possible?

How to test whether you're lacking vitamin D?

One way to test is to apply a little bit of pressure to your sternum with your fingers (sternum = chest bone). If you experience mild pain, it could point to a vitamin D deficiency.

You can also test yourself with the following list:

  • I rarely go outside
  • I always use sun protection
  • My clothes completely cover up my body when I do go outside
  • I'm not currently using vitamin D supplements
  • I don't eat fish like salmon, herring, sardines 2-3 times a week
  • I don't eat mushrooms often
  • I lack energy
  • I get cold often
  • I suffer from an autoimmune disease

If you answered "YES" at least 3 times, you might benefit from using a vitamin D supplement!

Supplementation is the easiest way to maintain healthy vitamin D levels.
